Quick update on fasting and April goal met!

April 30th, 2018 at 08:24 pm

Howdy, checking in here, in case anyone was worried. Fasting has not killed me, haha! I have been intermittent fasting daily- ranging from 18-24 hours. Most days I eat within a 3 to 4 hour period, like 4-7pm. I feel great most of the time doing this! I lost 3 lbs in the first 3 days, then started bouncing around a lb or two. Last Sunday-Tuesday I did a 48 hour fast. I had a headache on Monday, which was my first negative feeling since I started. It was gone on Tuesday. Feelings of hunger would come along, but go away quickly; showing a lot of the struggle is mental. The experts say that if you can make it two days, you might as well go longer because the hunger pangs disappear and you get more energy as your body is set to live on body fat. I am planning on going 3 days/72 hours, so from dinner last night (Sunday) to dinner Wednesday. I am prepared with my water, coffee, tea, salt if needed, and being at work during the day helps keep me distracted. At home, I have some books to read, will do light yoga/meditation and happy to go to bed early!

April goals: I came in under my $330 budget for Groceries!!! Finally! I came close, about $327. For May, my goal will be $300; it should be doable since I've been fasting and am not buying food all the time. I did buy some clothes from Old Navy, using a gift card from previous clothing returns. No spending on cosmetics/skin care. Next month I will have to replenish my face moisturizer, which costs $15.

I am so glad you are sharing your experience w intermittent fasting. I always heard it was bad for you etc.. and slowed down the metabolism but just last week I read some info that it does not. I was (am) going to try it and it is nice to get your first hand account. 3 lbs in 3 days.. wow..

excited for you .. is your goal to lose weight?

Thanks for the comments Rachael! Fasting has been practiced for thousands of years, for healing and religious reasons, and of course, when food was scarce! I'm so glad that it's being brought out again and new research being done. I read and listen to everything I can from Dr. Jason Fung. He is a kidney specialist who uses fasting to treat thousands of patients, many of them diabetics. As for the general opinion that fasting is dangerous, here are my thoughts:

    1. Humans would be extinct if it was so bad.
    2. Who benefits from people fasting? Pretty much, just the people who are doing it. Pharmaceutical companies want to sell the pills, food manufacturers need us to eat several times a day in order to sell packaged food, etc. The fitness industry relies on us overeating so we keep joining the gym or buying exercise equipment.

On your other question, I cut out most of my supplements during my extended fast. I do take Magnesium capsules, and spray magnesium oil on my skin before bed (very relaxing!) and if I start feeling tired or spacey, drink water with sea salt. Magnesium and sodium are the key minerals you want to have on hand, because you flush out a lot of water. I drink coffee (with small amount of heavy cream- no sweetener or even half and half), black or green tea, Perrier and lots of H2O. Dr. Fung says you can have up to 50 calories a day (all fat, such as cream) and it won't affect the fast. I do very light exercise, try to stay active throughout the day. No running/heavy lifting for me.

Let me know if you decide to try it! Many people start with 18:6, meaning you eat within a 6 hour window of your chosing, and best to eat mainly whole foods, but it works with any diet. Take care!
